Over-the-counter alpha-blocker for BPH
Published on 04/29/10The alpha-blocker tamsulosin is now available from pharmacies without prescription for the symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) in men aged 45–75.
Manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim says that pharmacists will assess men who complain of urinary symptoms using a validated screening questionnaire. If treatment is appropriate, they can supply treatment for a two-week trial period at a dose of 400µ/day. If this is well tolerated, they can provide a further four weeks’ supply. Pharmacists will advise men to see their GP for a full prostate health check within the first six weeks. If the diagnosis is confirmed by the GP, over-the-counter treatment can be continued. Pharmacists must refer men to their GP if symptoms worsen or change, or if they experience any problems with the medication.
Tamsulosin is being marketed as Flomax Relief. A website (www.flomaxrelief.co.uk) provides further information for men and the opportunity to buy online. The trial pack costs £8.99 and four weeks’ treatment costs £16.99.
